Slice of Life 3/31/12

Today is almost April Fool’s day! And now for something much more relevant:

Today I went to Landon’s house for a D&D game! It was really fun, and even the completely non-D&D things we did were awesome. During the game, we started out by rolling two natural 20s (the best roll you can get on a 20-sided die (also called a d20); usually a natural 20 succeeds in some awesome way), which basically skipped the first challenge. We eventually took a break for dinner, and after that there was only one hour left so we did a few other random things. In the end, I got into a logic battle with Landon (which had nothing to do with D&D), and I think I won (I see logic battles as where in a very abstract set of rules you would lose in a manner you find unfair, so you try to make it so you at least stalemate by pointing out fallacies of what your opponent has done). In all, I was very satisfied with my decision to go to the D&D game.

Some thoughts that were running through my head at one point earlier today:

I can’t believe that they left me at home to do homework while they go to Guardian Games and have fun (“them” in this case being my mom and brother)! I have this homework to do, and I KNOW it’s not going to be easy. This should be easy, but this is going to be hard for me because- huh. Did I just get one part done already? Okay, so it might not be THAT hard, but I will still take a 5 minute break anyway.

~~~10 minutes later~~~
Is it already 10 minutes later? That was at most three. But I think I should get just a little more break. I’ll set the timer this time.
~~~5 minutes later~~~

Okay, that was also far too short. In total that might have been 5 minutes, but not 15. This timer might be dysfunctional, but I think my break is over now.

This work is easy, but tedious. My impatience is growing, and finishing this within the allotted amount of time seems implausible. Wait, I just finished. I need to stop overestimating the difficulty of my work.

I hope you enjoy this different type of writing; I am experimenting to find the type I am best at.

One month ago, today would have been Leap Day! And now for your feature program.

Today was the day after I had a sleepover with Riley. We played Mario Party 9, which I think is the most energetic video game I have every played (when my brother and I play video games, we usually jump around a lot during the climatic or exciting parts). I had more fun than I have had for a while, and the games were really fun. The Mario Party series of games are essentially board games in video game format, with things that would be far too complex to have in an ordinary board game, like minigames and points. They have also changed the layout of the board compared to the previous games, with instead of a roundabout type board, you have a long drive to the finish line, with everyone practically the same piece. Also, instead of making stars few and far between, they are very common, and getting 50+ is very plausible.

Today I am expecting Riley (a friend from school) to come over for a sleepover! This is very exciting, as I do not get to see him outside of school as much as I would like. I don’t know what I will do yet, but I will definitely show him Blue Moo (a Sandra Boynton collection of 18 utterly ludicrous songs). And I hope to play a few video games with him as well as tell him about a YouTube series I found out about the day before yesterday. The whole thing, if it goes according to plan, will be fun. What is this plan, you ask? I have no idea.

Today I went to a gaming store and bought two D&D books and two dice. The total was 27 dollars, which is good, seeing as D&D books usually cost 20-30 dollars. The dice cost four dollars each, but they were nonstandard (one had fourteen sides, the other had sixteen), so they were good too. I have only so far seen the less expensive one (the manual of the planes (planes as in magical extra dimensions, not airplanes)) and it was awesome. They were selling the manual of the planes for only eight dollars, so I asked them if it was a typo (which my mom says was not great haggling skills, but whatever), but it was not, so I got what I think was a great deal.

Today I went to Quaker Meeting. As you may or may not know, I am a Quaker, and go to Multnomah Monthly Meeting every week (the “monthly” is how often meeting for business is held; meeting for worship is held every Sunday). There is a youth program that I go to, but the adults go to unprogrammed worship, where they meet in silence and say any thoughts they find important. I have been in unprogrammed worship once, and I don’t have the attention span to go there without being bored. The youth program is much more interesting, and I find it very enjoyable, especially because I am friends with some of the other children in the youth group.
Other notable things that happen at Meeting include that the first Sunday of every month is birthday Sunday, where everyone that has a birthday in that month’s birthday is celebrated. There is always cake, and I am interested to find out what the cakes will be like on April Fool’s Day.

Today my family went to a vacuum cleaner museum, as well as a few other places, but I will currently focus on the vacuum cleaner museum. There were more than a few vacuum cleaners that looked like they were very old (one of them my mom almost didn’t recognize as a vacuum cleaner). My brother and I had fun locating a security camera (with a closed circuit television) I mean, they were so old you would have to see it to understand how awesome it was. If you were there, you would agree with me, but it is very hard for me to describe. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience in the vacuum cleaner museum, and hope to return there someday. Maybe during summer break.

The other places we visited were a Goodwill store, Willamette Falls, a park, and one other place I don’t know how to describe. The entire expedition was quite fun, and I had absolutely no regrets about going. I would write about more, but I am lacking in time.

Today I had an interview at Pacific Crest, a high school I am looking into. I like the school and think that it would be very nice to go to, and am very happy that I was accepted into that school. Yes, I was accepted. I am just as excited as I am. Yes, that is a tautology (a statement that is always true) but I have no other way of accurately representing the facts. And as it happens, I am very, very excited. Pacific Crest is my first choice for high school, so this news is terrific, especially because my parents like the school too. So this is really a great happening. Other high schools, like LaSalle and Central Catholic, are good too, but Pacific Crest is the best school of them by far. And at least one of my friends from Gately will be there, Landon Wyndham.

At this writing, there is only 20% of the school week left before spring break! I like using percentages to give an idea of how much of something there is. The word “percent” comes from “per cent”, where “cent” means hundred (like in century), “percent” literally means “out of 100″. There is a word for “out of 1000″ but it’s not very commonly used, so I don’t know what it is, And I’m not interested enough to Google it. So you can if you want to, but you have to do it yourself. Okay? Good.

Today my mom made gluten-free oatmeal muffins. The “gluten-free” part is because of a diet my family is on that I am, honestly, not too enthusiastic about. But back to the muffins: they were just sweet enough that you would want to have more, and my only complaint was that they were too hot at the time I ate them. I am looking forward to seeing them in lunches in the future, as they are very delicious.

As a side note, my mom says the sweetening ingredient in them is maple syrup.
